Finance South East Joins Forces with EPSRC

Finance South East Ltd (FSE) is pleased to announce a partnership with the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) under which FSE will deliver a new two year pilot fund that will facilitate the collaboration of universities with industry.
The Collaboration Fund, due for launch this month, will provide grant funding of up to £100,000 to university projects. The Fund is available to all UK academic institutions that have previously received EPSRC research funding and that wish to work in collaboration with a commercial partner to develop that research into an industry application.
The EPSRC has chosen to work with FSE because of FSE’s previous experience and success in managing proof-of-concept and early stage funds. FSE has over £20m of funds under management and early-stage proof-of-concept funding is one of its specialist areas.
CEO of Finance South East, Sally Goodsell, said “We are delighted to establish this partnership with the EPSRC and to be given the opportunity to extend our fund management expertise nationwide. We have structured this Fund with the objectives of the EPSRC in mind and to ensure that the new funding is used to deliver visible economic value to the UK”.
As the main Government agency for engineering and the physical sciences, the EPSRC already invests around £740m a year in research and training in academic institutions. The commercial focus of the Collaboration Fund will be to accelerate innovations that have already received research grants through EPSRC support to achieve industrial or business applications.
EPSRC's head of Knowledge Transfer Dr John Baird commented, “This pioneering initiative combines EPSRC grant funding with FSE’s expertise and will deliver practical support to researchers looking to explore the commercial potential of their work with a collaborative partner. Key benefits will include experienced mentors assigned to each project and access to funding advisors for help with business planning and the structure of a suitable longer term funding package. We envisage three calls per year that will complement EPSRC's ongoing Follow-on Fund calls and we anticipate strong interest from a wide range of institutions”.
